Which way? That can be a critical question when you’re averaging 60 kilometres per hour down a slope named Braveheart for a reason and riding a set of skis which, although made of various high-tech composite materials and which are per fectly safe, are desperate to take the shortest route down the mountainside.
AFRICAS ONLY SKI RESORT
It’s a big question, and at Tiffindell –South Africa’s only ski resort in the Southern Drakensberg near the town of Rhodes – it’s now a R250-million question as a new development throws up an avalanche of winter and summer activities for the entire family. In January 2008, a Tiffindell resort that opened in 1993 will undergo the next phase in its transformation when ground is broken in a bid to make this one of South Africa’s premier lifestyle resorts, no matter what the season.
Tiffindell’s most obvious attraction has always been skiing, a reputation which will be enhanced by the addition of several new runs that will offer the beginner or expert skier over 10 kilometres of runs, and provide snowboarders with the ultimate adrenalin rush. Two new chair lifts will also make access to these runs a lot easier.
But the expansion of Tiffindell will cater for both the winter and summer visitor. A new five-star lodge with a Spa and Wellness Centre, gym, restaurants and conference facilities will provide an upmarket accommodation option available on a fractional ownership basis.

At a cost of only R340 000, with finance options available, you can claim one week in winter and two weeks in summer.
And it’s when the snow melts that the new face of Tiffindell will truly emerge. Families will now have access to multisports facilities including activities such as fly-fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, camping, mountain climbing and hiking.
The skiers will still be welcomed by grass skiing activities, while the youngsters can try their hand at the skateboard park or enjoy a state-of-the-art Flow Rider wave machine.
Internationally trained staff will be on hand to entertain the kids while parents enjoy their time in the mountains at what will surely become Africa’s premier adventure zone. As for getting there, it’s a question of taking either a leisurely eight-hour drive or chartering your own flight complete with luxury transfer service from Lanseria to land on a new runway that’s within a twist and a flip from the Tiffindell Ski Resort.
